Just remember which books are bleak-listed; e.g. Barry Potterer, 100 Years of Silly Tudor, Prude and Perjury, The Hungary Olympic Games, The Chronicles of Nerdia and Of Mike and Ben.

In the meantime, here is a list of books I have vetted and will reconsider for approval if the appro... apprap... proper changes are made. Read this manyule carefully mini-irons.

Excerpt

What happens?

Some spy is told to carry out an assignment in East Germany to uncover a double agent but he falls for someone prior to this and love ultimately messes the operation up.

Reason for bleaklisting?

Proper spies don’t fall in love. Wimps they are!

What should have happened?

Eric is sent on an exclusive mission into East Germany to assassinate a double agent. Before setting off he is approached by an air stewardess named Fiz who fancies him but he turns her down. She does warn him that it’s cold in East Germany and gives him some cough syrup.

Suspicious of the bottle labelled poison with a skull on it, Eric tosses the syrup and completes his mission. When he returns home to England he has a runny nose and is coughing a lot. Fiz realises he has seen through the poison expertly disguised as cough syrup and she runs away. She is shot and killed by a traffic warden who believes her car is parked on double yellow lines. Eric ends the novel by nipping to the pharmacy for some genuine cough syrup.

Special instruction

Make available at MI5, MI6, CIA, B&Q and M&S and rename The Spy Who Came Home with a Cold.

Mr B compares the stories

Dear me, Charlie, I thought you’d like John le CarrĂ©’s 1963 Cold War Novel. The Spy Who Came in From the Cold does deal with Communist East Germany where Alec Leamas is sent, under the pretence that he is defecting, and with the intention of locating Mundt, suspected of being a double agent. Alec has a romance with Liz which ultimately throws a spanner in the works. There isn’t anything about cough syrup thankfully and as with Charlie’s other efforts, this one is likely to disappear into the ether. My apologies to Mr le CarrĂ© for this despicable alternative to his story.

About the Authors:

Donna: Donna is a longtime book lover and sometime book reviewer and has devoured books from
an early age. She writes short (or long) stories as and when inspiration hits and is married to fantasy author David M. Brown (Fezariu's Epiphany, A World Apart). She was also co-contributor to David's book, Man vs Cat, a humorous look at life with six rambunctious rescue cats.

Donna has lived in many different areas of the UK over the last 30-something years but has remained in Yorkshire for the past decade. She ardently disputes the misnomer that 'It's grim up north'. You can find Donna on Google+, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Goodreads, or visit her and her husband's shared blog: B-Lines and Felines.

David: David Brown could be considered a fantasy fanatic, especially since he has spent the last 10 years developing a 47,000-year history for his fictional world of Elenchera. When converting his obsession into literary form, David commits himself to a rigorous writing and editing process before his work can meet his approval. Combined with the critical eye of his wife and a BA Hons in History and English, David's dedication leads him to his goal of inspiring readers through heartfelt stories and characters.

Although David is inspired primarily by fantasy fiction, he also finds his muse in the form of anime, world cinema, history, and biographies. His own books, Fezariu's Epiphany and A World Apart, combine aspects from worlds both old and new into compelling tales of a world not soon forgotten., David himself certainly does not lack a spirit of adventure; in fact, he left his job in 2007 in order to spend a month travelling. Second only to meeting and marrying his wife, David counts this as one of the most amazing experiences of his life.

Random Facts About Tonya Kuper

Thank you so much for having me on your blog. I’m excited to be here! I thought instead of me answering the usual author question, readers may enjoy some absolute randomness.
So here is a list of random facts about me:

  • I taught yoga for over three years. I haven’t practiced, let alone taught, in years.
  • I once partied with Keith Urban’s band and road crew until four in the morning. Keith was in his room but his bald guitar player said I had the sexiest hair he’d ever seen. So that was…coo/interesting/weird.
  • My kids have life threatening food allergies. My oldest son went into anaphylaxis when he was just over a year old and was gray by the time we got the ER. It seemed as if people came from the walls, appearing out of nowhere to save his life. Scariest day of my life.
  • I have a reaction to a stomach medication that makes my brain think I have Parkinson’s Disease. Yeah, I found that out the hard way. My speech is slurred, my tongue presses to the roof of my mouth, my bottom jaw slides to the side. It’s pretty crazy.
  • There was a movie, a biographical drama, in 2000 called The Perfect Storm, staring George Clooney and Mark Walberg and nominated for two Academy Awards. I sat next to the friend of the crew members lost at sea that served as one of the consultants for the film on the sailing/fishing elements. It was the most interesting plane ride!
  • Anyone watch 24 starring Keifer Sutherland? Well, my friend and I were in NYC in 2011 and ended up at the same bar as him and Jason Patrick (his co-star in a play and Lost Boys, the vampire movie from the 80’s). And Keifer mooned us. Like, ten feet from us.
  • I’m obsessed with accents. Southern drawl, East coast, Canadian, English, Irish, Scottish, whatever. So…cute men + accents = automatic points from me. It’s probably because I grew in rural Illinois then moved to Omaha, Nebraska after college, which is the call center of America because we have such a flat accent, basically no accent. It’s very…generic American.
  • My family, between all four of us, is allergic to almost every mammal on Earth, therefore we have no hairy pets. We literally can’t be enclosed with most mammal dander. It’s so bad, we can’t even have the “hypo-allergenic” dogs. We had fish. They died. And they were boring. My boys wanted to interact with something – so we got a leopard gecko, a desert dweller. I had no idea they were so cute and have such personalities! I post pics and videos of Mo (short for Mo’o, the Hawaiin word for lizard/gecko) on my Instagram account every once in while.

EXCERPT

After releasing a long breath, Chace pulled back on the road and continued driving in silence.
I wanted so badly to clear the air. “Chace,” I started. “I—Ah!”
Something ran into us. The tires screeched against the asphalt. Chace tried to regain control of his Mustang, but it was no use. We flipped over.
Luckily, we were both wearing seatbelts. Safety first! Dad would be proud. Was it really the seatbelts that saved us, or the fact that we were both abnormal?
Stars danced before my eyes. I could hear Chace trying to free himself to get us out of the car.
“Nat, are you okay? There’s something—” his voice trailed. A loud bang resounded above our heads. Something pounded on the bottom, which was now the top since we were upside down. Whatever it was relentlessly hammered on the car.
Chace pried himself from the seat and got me loose. We managed to climb out my window, only seconds before the car got flung over to the other side of the road.
Our mouths opened wide in shock; it stood before us, eyes blood red with scales all over its arms and legs. A beast you couldn’t even describe as being straight out of a storybook, because such an ugly thing had never been portrayed before.
The beast growled, foam dripping from the corners of its mouth. It was gigantic. I almost pissed myself at the sight.
“What the hell is that?” I managed to ask.
Chace gripped my hand tightly and yelled, “Run!”
We darted into the woods, the beast right at our backs. We managed to put some distance between us as it crashed into trees and jerked itself. Still, it wouldn’t let up. It just kept coming.
We ran deep into the forest. I started panting. My right ankle ached. I made it a few more feet when my knees buckled and I fell.
Chace dropped down fast and tried pulling me up. “C’mon, Nat, it’s getting closer. Get up!” he shouted.
I couldn’t move. I was exhausted, emotionally and physically. My legs were cramping so much.
My throat felt parched and my voice came out rasped as I uttered, “I can’t.” I pushed him to go on. His grasp only tightened.
His eyes expanded. “Are you crazy? I’m not leaving you. Come on!” He pulled me up and I hopped with him over to a large redwood tree, nuzzling up to the crusty root as the beast drew close. I knew it was only a matter of time before it found us. My heart was beating so loud a deaf person could hear it.
I covered my mouth and pressed into Chace. We stood still as he wrapped his arms around my body in protective mode.
The beast stopped running and began searching the area, sniffing out our scents like a dog.
Great! It’s definitely going to find us now.
The grotesque-looking creature treaded up behind the tree where we hid. Chace and I crouched quietly, staring at each other, mystified.
Everything went really still, like the part of the movie where there was absolutely no music in the background, not even the sound of breathing, and you knew something was about to happen.
Unable to hear the beast at all, we gave each other a perplexed glance over. Then suddenly, it pushed its head around the tree and growled at us.
Instantly, Chace pushed me to the ground and flung himself over me. The beast raised a hand to stomp on him and I screamed, “No!”
Flames sprang out of my chest toward it. Its hand caught on fire and the beast backed away fast, snarling horridly and flashing its hand to put out the flames. I eased myself from beneath Chace and rose to my feet. He grabbed me.
“Nat, what are you doing?”
I brushed him off and edged closer to the beast. My insides filled with unbelievable power. It gave me such a rush. A desire I’d never felt before. I loved it. I yearned for more flames to appear, and obediently, my whole body lit up. This time it blazed more, so much more.
The beast spun around and made a low, guttural sound of anger at my presence. It charged at me, and I sent huge balls of fire from both my hands until its entire body was engulfed in flames. It groaned in agony and fell to the ground, creating an enormous tremor. Vibrations rushed the area, throwing me backwards. I tumbled to the ground as the beast exploded, showering the ground with burnt flesh.
When my flames finally cooled, my body was drenched in sweat. I stood, though I was exhausted.
Chace looked at me with amazement painted across his face. He started walking toward me. Before he could reach me, I became dizzy and collapsed right back to the ground.
Darkness awaited my return.
